Piglet Cinder

As most of you know, the High Country experienced a strong dose of winter weather during an ice and snow storm in December.  Here at Tweetsie Railroad, we are happy to report the park didn’t suffer any major damage, but we will miss some of our favorite trees.

People often wonder about the animals at Tweetsie’s Deer Park Zoo during the winter season, especially if a storm hits.  Our staff made it to Tweetsie’s Deer Park Zoo at the top of the mountain every day during the ice storm, and their first trip up the mountain (on Christmas Day) to the Zoo took two hours!  Despite the frigid conditions, Tweetsie made sure to keep all of the animals warm and comfortable.  Our llama, burros, miniature pony, goats and deer (which seemed to enjoy the snow the most) all grow thick winter coats which sure came in handy!

As for Cinder, Tweetsie’s baby pot-bellied pig, she stayed inside the Deer Park Zoo shelter quite a bit with her mom and aunt.  The snow was deeper than Cinder was tall!  Cinder is about 5 months old, and is growing up fast! Speaking of the baby animals, 10 of our Pygmy Goats are expecting babies (known as “kids”) in April, and most will have twins.  We’re excited for you to meet them on April 30, opening day for Tweetsie’s 2010 season!

  • I returned to my home next to Tweetsie for Christmas with 6 adults, 3 babies and 2 dogs. All went wonderful playing in the snow for the first time and making a giant snow man.  Until the electric went off - we had food and cooked out on the summer kitchen but no water to wash the dished, babies or our self!!  After three days we left BUT the children were very upset becasue they did not here the tweetsie train and thought the snow and ice had hurt it. They did not want to leave until I convienced them that the train was inside and saft!!!!  Oh the minds of small children are just great.

  • I am really enjoying this blog! It is so great hearing what’s done to keep the park going. I love Tweetsie, so it’s a real treat to read this. I’m really glad to hear the park didn’t suffer any major damage. I hope we’ll hear what’s going on in the locomotive shop soon. I’m really looking forward to seeing #12 and #190 in action this year!

I just wanted to send you all a note to thank you for being around for all of these years. I came to Tweetsie as a kid (back in the late 70's) and had a great time. Now, I get to bring my kids back to do the same. We brought our then four year old daughter last October for the first time. She had been asking ever since "When can we go back?" We were able to bring her back this past Sunday and she was absolutely thrilled. She is now asking when we can bring her baby sister to Tweetsie with us. So I want to thank you all again for doing such a wonderful job and to say that we are already planning to see Tweetsie again year!”
